th400 problem

th400 on hz 1 tonner has always worked well, then the other day it decided not to engage a gear when put in D until I rev it. It's fine if I start in 2 and shift to D after getting started, everything works ok after getting started. I haven't got a clue about auto trans, so can somebody let me know what might be wrong with it
