1972 Holden HQ 1 Tonner resto

Hi all,

Thought id throw up a thread on my new project. As the title states, its a 1972 Holden HQ 1 Tonner. This car has been in the family for quite a few years now, the last half of them its been sitting in different sheds or driveways. Because of this its in pretty poor condition. My father wanted to restore this HQ for years but never had the time or money to do it. I sat down with him a few weeks ago to discuss whether or not he would like to sell it to me, and what he and i both had in mind for it. He agreed that they would sell me the car on the conditions that i restore it and NEVER sell it outside the family. Sadly he passed away the next day unexpectedly. Needless to say the car holds huge sentimental value for me. Therefore i would like to do as much of the work myself as i possibly can. That plus the fact i pissed away far too much cash on my previous project by paying everyone else to work on it...

Plans in the short term are to do paint and panel first so i can have it on the road as streetable while i save/build the driveline. First up i will be separating the cab from chassis and taking it all back to bare metal for rust repairs and a respray. Will be sticking with the current 202 red motor and manual while i save for the new gear. Undecided until i discuss options with an engineer, but ideally will be a 454 big block, T400, ford 9" ect.

Anyway here are some 'start' pics i took today to show what im starting with. This is my first restoration of any real kind, so appreciate any and all comments/help.

The last 2 pics are where the tray was T-boned by a speeding motorbike at an intersection...

Cheers!
